Over the past year, the Council of State Governments Justice Center has been engaged in a School Discipline Consensus Project that has convened more than 100 stakeholders to forge unprecedented national consensus recommendations for school discipline reform. The project will result in a comprehensive report with policy and practice recommendations crafted by a diverse, bipartisan group of students, parents, community partners, educators and school leaders, law enforcement and court officials, health and child welfare professionals, and others committed to students’ success.
The goal of the project, as part of the Supportive School Discipline Initiative, launched by the U.S. Attorney General and the U.S. Secretary of Education, is to minimize the dependence on suspension and expulsion to manage student behaviors, improve students’ academic outcomes, reduce their involvement in the juvenile justice system, and promote safe and productive learning environments.
Join the Just and Fair Schools Fund for a sneak preview of the Consensus Project recommendation topic areas; a lively interactive discussion on how community leaders can use the findings to seize opportunities for reform; and brainstorming with grantmaker colleagues on how philanthropy can leverage its expertise and networks to help advance successful practices. RSVP required, so email svongrassamy(at)publicinterestprojects.org by November 12th for building entrance or call info.
Speakers include: Roslyn Broadnax, Parent Leader, CADRE (Community Asset Development Re-defining Education), and Consensus Project stakeholder participant; Maisie Chin, Co-founder and Director, CADRE, and Consensus Project stakeholder participant; and, Michael Thompson, Director, Council of State Governments Justice Center
